Three of Sheffield's finest independent labels have joined forces to release the four-track "Clam Thissen Bingo" EP from rising locals Sydney Herds (ft. members of Potpourri/Bingo Records) and Big Break (ft. members of Nai Harvest, Best Friends, Hipshakes).
The bands donate two tracks each: Sydney Herds channel Cate Le Bon's askew experimental pop, while punk upstarts Big Break seamlessly mix hardcore with breakneck melodies (FFO Pissed Jeans, Sauna Youth).
Sydney Herds say of "New Sydney": "This song started out as an attempt to play the tune of a passing ice cream van on a guitar. That didn't work, because I'm not good at guitar, and instead a basic version of this song came out. It's got nothing to do with ice creams otherwise, though. Part of it is about a really bad poetry reading I accidentally went to in West Cumbria and how eager everybody is to look clever all the time."
Big Break say of "The Gaffer": "Our revenge anthem for those who work, have worked or will ever work in their lives."
Sydney Herds is the shared project of Lauren Dowling of Potpourri, and Lloyd Bent, who runs Bingo Records.
It formed in lockdown out of boredom, and an off-the-cuff desire to make some music under the guise of a fake solo artist - Sydney Herds - and get it played on the radio by unsuspecting DJs.
Snippets of music were sent back and forth between Lloyd and Lauren and songs were created ‘exquisite corpse’ style. Once finished, they were sent to radio DJs, and some played them. Since accomplishing its initial aim, SH has become more of a regular band, playing occasional gigs with Tom Diffenthal of Family Selection Box and Zac Barfoot of Sun Drift joining the band.
Collaboratively minded through and through, Sydney Herds has always released split singles with other bands. The first came in summer 2020, with fellow Bingo Records band Willow Layne, and this latest release sees them do the same with fellow Sheffield band and Delicious Clam’s latest export Big Break. The two tracks featured this time were written in late 2020, in the winter, when Lloyd and Lauren had nothing better to do.
Big Break occur somewhere in the cracks between hardcore, new wave and egg punk. Apparently unable to concentrate on a song for longer than 2 minutes, their music is minimalist, agitated and addictive. Taking inspiration from the likes of Devo, Negative Approach and "Food Fight" by The Village People, they combine hyper guitar hooks with taut rhythms and break-neck changes of pace.
They sing songs about the gaffer (bad), computer phones (bad), bank holidays (good), relationships (mostly bad) and bodily fluids (depends).
Formed in Sheffield at Delicious Clam, the band's current and previous musical incarnations include Nai Harvest, Best Friends, The Hipshakes, Avida Dollars, Thee Mightees, The Joy Boys, Thumbuster, Crawlies and more.
Big Break are: Joseph Armstrong (vocals and synth), Ben Russell (bass and vocals), Tom Roper (guitar), Lew Currie (drums).
Enjoy your Big Break, and remember, ‘what the gaffer don’t know won’t hurt him’.
The artwork for the split is a pot that was made by artist/musician Mr Ben (of Mr Ben and Mr Bens fame) then smashed with a hammer to create the cover.
